Benzoyl peroxide in plain English

Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most studied acne actives, and it works by releasing oxygen in the pore, which kills C. acnes, the bacteria linked to red, inflamed breakouts. Bacteria do not become resistant to it, and US over-the-counter products use 2.5 to 10 percent, with lower strengths often working as well with less irritation. It can cause dryness, peeling and redness. It also bleaches towels, pillowcases, clothing and hair.

Is benzoyl peroxide bad for acne?

No. Benzoyl peroxide is on the helpful side for acne-prone skin and is not known to clog pores. Our checker groups it with the anti-acne ingredients. Like most acne actives, it can cause dryness or irritation at first, so start slowly.
