Mandelic acid in plain English

Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid with a larger molecule, so it penetrates more slowly and tends to be less irritating. It exfoliates dead skin and has some antibacterial activity, which is why it is popular for acne-prone and sensitive skin. It may also help fade post-acne marks. Like other AHAs, it can increase sun sensitivity.

Is mandelic acid bad for acne?

No. Mandelic acid is on the helpful side for acne-prone skin and is not known to clog pores. Our checker groups it with the exfoliant ingredients. Like most acne actives, it can cause dryness or irritation at first, so start slowly.
